Nizamabad

Nizamabad is a city and district located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is also the commercial marketing centre of Andhra Pradesh and was known by the name of Induru, earlier. In the year 1905 it was renamed Nizamabad after the Nizam of Hyderabad at that time, Asaf Jah VI.

The Rashtrakutas ruled Nizamabad in the ancient times and later there was a railway line constructed here that connected Hyderabad and Mumbai with Nizamabad as the main station. The British constructed this railway line in 1905. Some of the main routes that connect different cities are located here like the National Highway 7 that connects Kanyakumari and Varanasi.

Places to Visit in Nizamabad

The District Archaeological and Heritage Museum is one of the best places to visit while your in the town of Nizamabad. the museums building which was once the Town Hall, houses number of beautiful artefacts, and antiquities which shows the evolution of human civilization right from Palaeolithic to 16th Century A.D. Vijayanagar Times.

Another heritage centre near the town of Nizamabad is Domakonda Fort that stands as a magnificent example of the defence architecture of those days. The fort is beautifully built, with a blend of Muslim and Hindu architecture, as the place was ruled by them. As you enter the fort, the very sight of the arched gateway speaks of the Asaf Jaahi architecture. The fort has number of tall, round and square fortresses running all over its compound wall. There are two palaces and a temple complex inside the fort. The palaces are excellently built especially the windows with tainted paintings and the wooden architecture are very attractive. There is a lotus pond in these palaces.

Nizamabad Fort is an ancient fort that was built by the kings of Rashtrakuta dynasty who ruled this region for many years. It was constructed during the 10th century AD on top of a small hill located to the south-west of the Nizamabad town. This fort is a huge one standing at an altitude of about 300 meters above the ground. The entrance is marked with a huge arch-shaped gate made of stone. Inside the fort, there is a 40 feet high monolithic victory pillar built during the Rashtrakuta reign.

Sarangapuram, a small place about 8 kms from Nizamabad town, is yet another pilgrimage centre. This place is famous for a very big temple of Lord Hanuman. This temple was neglected for many years and very few people (only the locals) knew about this. But today, the government has taken initiative to develop this place with good supply of electricity and water. There is a nice children s park with beautiful garden. Many people come here for picnic on weekends.

Kanteshwara is one of the oldest dwellings in Nizamabad. It is like a colony in the town that was a village few decades ago. This place is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva who is worshipped here as "Neela Kanteshwara" (Lord Shiva having blue throat). This is one of the oldest temples in Nizamabad Town. Apart from the temple, there are a few attractions here like a church, which is said to be one of the biggest and oldest in the town, a mosque on the hill top having the replica of Charminar.

Sri Raghunatha Temple or Quila Ramalayam is the temple dedicated to Sri Rama and His consort Sita Devi. It is called as Quila Ramalayam for it is situated inside the Nizamabad Fort premises. The entrance of the temple is consecutive to the entrance of the fort. There are spacious halls surrounding the temple which occupies about 3900 sq. feet of area. The idol of Lord Rama is on the thrown which is in the shape of Kurma (the tortoise), with its legs, hands and head clearly visible.

Another picnic spot is the deer park near the Ali Sagar. It was established in the year 1985 where you can find number of species of deer. This is a best place to spend some time with beautiful hillock, garden and lake.

Nizam Sagar Dam is constructed on a tributary of Godavari region in the Nizamabad district. The place lies to the north west of the famous Pearl City or the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The distance from the state capital, Hyderabad, is about 145 kilometres and the towns featuring the dam include Achampet and Banjapalle.

Alisagar Reservoir is situated at a distance of 13Km from Nizamabad which is another important picnic spot, close to Nizamabad. A beautiful garden raised here attract picnickers from Nizamabad.

Nizamabad Fort was developed on an original temple of Ram Mandir constructed by Raghunath Das, who had also constructed a big tank which, is the main water source for Nizamabad town till today. Later the temple was developed into a fort.

Alisagar is the beautiful garden developed by Nizam of Hyderabad. This is under the control of Irrigation Department as the Garden is under the bund of Alisagar Tank maintained by Irrigation Department. The Garden is in (33) acres with fountains and has lot of flowers, Deer Park, Tree House. The Garden is very poorly maintained due to insufficient funds and non-availability of technical no-how in garden maintenance. There is an island inside the Alisagar lake. Boating facility in the tank has been introduced recently. About 1000 to 2000 people visit the Alisagar garden on Sundays. Alisagar is situated about (10) K.Ms. away from the Nizamabad town and (2) K.Ms. from Nizamabad-Basar route.

Sarangapur is temple is located (7) K.Ms. from North-East of Nizamabad town abating Alisagar. There is a Hanuman temple located on a hill top. These temple is constructed by Ramdas. This temple as 1400 acres of land. There is a tremendous scope for develop site on hillock along with Alisagar Project. (10) acres of land on Hillock is being developed into a garden. Thereis (33) acres of land available near Sarangapur that can be developed into Eco-tourism by providing slab trails for walking.

Mallaram forest is located (7) K.Ms. of South-West Nizamabad town. In the forest there is very suitable to develop for Eco-tourism. There is small hillock on which hut is being built. I have requested Conservator of Forest to provide Wooden / Cement benches near the click over looking the Mallaram cheruvu. He has been asked to make railings, statues of wild animals and trail through the forest for hiking. I also requested him to develop a small crocodile form / Deer park.
